“Composta” is the Italian word for ‘stewed fruit’. Traditional compote is texturally quite different from “jellies” or jam preserves, which are cooked longer and with the addition of thickening agents. Envision a chunky syrup with just the right amount of Balsamic zest to brighten the palate! Compotes are more spoonable than spreadable, which allows for more versatility in the kitchen.
They can be used for toppings, fillings, sauces, or condiments. Strawberries are a classic – delectable spooned over cheesecake, ice cream, yogurt, and pancakes. This also makes an excellent topping for soft ripe cheeses such as Brie and Camembert!
